In a world that reminds us every day that we need to be smaller, stronger, more flexible, or better in some way, it's not hard to fall into the trap of criticism. But what if, rather than comparing ourselves to unattainable ideals, we began to practice gratitude for the body we currently possess?

Valentine's Day is all flowers and heart-shaped chocolates, but the greatest love affair you will ever experience is the one with your body.

Your Body: A Lifetime Companion

Think about it—your body has stood with you throughout it all. Every step that's ever passed your lips, every challenge overcome, every burst of belly laughs, every desperate cry in the dead of night, every hug, every stolen moment of slumber. It adapts, it heals, and it continues to be present for you when you're downright certain you're on empty.

And so much of the time, instead of dwelling on what our bodies ARE doing, we waste time thinking about all that they aren't.

Yoga teaches us to shift that attitude. Instead of punishing your body, you learn to listen to it. Instead of forcing it into a notion of "perfection," you welcome it where it is. And when you do that, something miraculous happens—you start to feel at home in yourself.

The Science of Gratitude and Your Body

Here's the thing: gratitude is not a warm-and-fuzzy exercise—it has real positive impacts on your nervous system, stress levels, and even body. Science verifies that shifting your focus away from self-criticism and toward appreciation can:

✅ Lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone that destroys our well-being)

✅ Improve sleep and energy

✅ Ease chronic pain by changing how we experience discomfort

✅ Increase motivation to care for ourselves in a positive-feeling manner, not out of obligation

A Simple Practice: Write Your Body a Love Letter

Having trouble getting started? Here's a simple exercise

❤️Write yourself a love note. Seriously. Spend 2 minutes today writing down one thing you enjoy about your body. Maybe it's your powerful legs, your full breath, or the way your shoulders drop when you finally exhale.

Not a writer? Don't stress. Do this instead:

❤️Say thank you out loud. The next time you catch yourself gazing into the mirror, switch criticism for gratitude. "Thank you, body, for holding me up today."

❤️Flow with love. Don't push your body. Instead, be curious about what it desires. Some days it's strong flow. Some days it's rest. Both are fine.

Yoga as an Act of Self-Love
